5th string tuner side view

Hey Diane. I wasn't going to post it cause it's a little ragged. I had already started rounding the neck and then had to rasp a flat spot for the tuner. Hmm - plan ahead or make it up as you go?

  • Well Diane, at the nut it's about 1 3/16" at the 5th fret maybe 1 3/8" and then tapers to about 2" at the pot. I usually cut fret slots in a seperate fret board before putting it on the neck but if I put frets into the neck definitley cut them before any tapering. I don't even know how I'd do it if it wasn't square. Oh yeah scarf joint before any of that. Before this I was paying 10 - 15 bucks  just for the 5th string tuner. That's almost 2 whole sets of CB Gitty econos.

  • Glad to share!  Is your fretboard, is it narrower at the nut end?  As I go through my order of operations, I think I need to cut the fret slots before I contour the neck. And set the scarf join for the head before that.

What did you do for your previous 5th strings?  Same thing?

  • My pleasure Diane. I have to tell you that looking at some of your builds has really inspired me in this stuff. I hope a banjo makes it to the service member you mentioned. As a draftee during the Vietnam era I can vouch for how much music can make a bad situation better.

  • Ah!  There it is!  Thanks!
