Wire for pickup winding

Can anyone offer me some advice about wire for pickup winding. This is one area of construction that I've not tried yet and I have in mind a few experiments. I've found a fair amount of info in forums and other online sources but I'm wary of making mistakes in conversion between gauges quoted on different sides of the Atlantic (ie. SWG and AWG). So I'm looking for info on what gauges other UK builders have used and any suggestions you have about suppliers.

  • Thanks for that info guys, I feel I'm on the right track now. Juju, that's an interesting site you pointed me too and I can see it being useful for several things.
  • Afraid that this is a new computer so I've lost all my links. I did have loads of info about it....

I can tell you that you can build a pickup winder out of mechano, a remote controled car and the counter off of a toy plane.

I hang about on the bare knuckle pickups forum and if you go to the product section of the website alot of them say what gauge wire was used. They're English so you can rely on the AWG being right.
  • Hi Mark - the most common wire used for pickups is 0.42 American Wire Gauge (AWG)or in english metric thats 0.063mm
this is where i buy mine from

it works out cheaper to buy 500g which would make about 10-12 three string pickups with 8-10,000 winds hope that helps - oh the prices exclude VAT and shipping
    juju :-)
