Steel hub caps and mounting electonic components???

Hi all, got my hands on a lovely vintage hubcap that I want to use for a guitar.

It is made of steel, and this has got me wondering about potential issues mounting electric components on it (pickup, sockets and maybe tone/ volume knobs.

Is there anything I should be aware (or wary) of? Grounding, insulation???

Anybody got any experience or advice in these matters?

Thanks in advance.

Alex

  • Mounting  electric pickups and controls  onto metal guitar bodies (hubcaps, tin cans etc) and scratchplates works fine -  it's gives good electrical continuity for the earth (ground) and if wired properly should provide good screening.

    • John, thanks, that puts my mind at ease.

Shopuld I ground the cap itself to the jack socket?

    • Just mounting the jack socket into a hole drilled thru' the steel hubcap will earth it, as long as it is a typical metal socket (not a one with a plastic "barrel" body).

    • Thanks John

  • I'm no help, couldn't bring my self to drill holes in this '47 Jag cap so settled for twin piezo's glued inside.

Did consider mounting a pup on a bracket near the end of  the fingerboard, but still would have controls on the wooden box306497755?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

    • That's a beautiful piece of work.

Did you mount the piezos straight onto the cap?

      Thanks

    • In a slice of plastic waste pipe embedded in hot glue
