Reasonably priced UK guitar parts supplier

Hi there guys and gals.
I just bought some machine heads from a seller on ebay who also has a website selling guitar parts (including some cool looking Johnny Reb pickups as well as wooden veneer covered pickups) The machine heads were £7 inc p&p and look to be good quality.
They've just put an ad up for their website on CBNation. It's warman guitars - http://www.warmanguitars.co.uk/  And rather than pricing their parts they ask you to offer a price. I'd be interested to know what anyone else pays for stuff. Anyway, it's cheaper and quicker than buying from the US and I like I say they seem to be good.
Chris
p.s I have no business interests here. Any other recommendations or experiences of UK based suppliers?

  • Hi all,

I have been really impressed with these "passive preamps" from china/Hong kong off ebay - they are now going for £4.35 for the volume/tone control ( a passive filter that works well) and piezo under saddle rod http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Small-Tone-Volume-EQ-Kit-And-Pickup-For-Guita...

I haven't bought of this particular seller but for this price I have bought three.

Typically the delivery can be upto 5 or 6 weeks so if you are happy to risk £4.35 and don't mind the wait take a look.

I have recently added one to a classical guitar and can run it through effects without the dreaded feedback.

I also added one to my last build and wired in a piezo disc using a small jackplug - it helps to control the feedback here also.

It was discussed previously in CBG wiring and electronics http://www.cigarboxnation.com/group/cbgwiringelectronics/forum/topi...
  • Maybe I got unlucky, but as I say, the volume on an electric using one of those "Alice" plain top strings seemed like it was about 30% less than the other plain and wound strings. They were OK acoustically, but I was so concerned about their magnetic performance that I decided it wasn't worth saving a few pennies, either on my own instruments for playing live or for customer instruments.

It is always interesting to hear other views - I was surprised Chickenbone John found them so vastly different to myself.

The ones I have tried as said above are the Alice A506 superlight electric strings (other reviews here http://www.dealextreme.com/feedbacks/BrowseReviews.dx/sku.19672) and the classical strings which I have used numerous times without problem.

I will be interested in how you find the 12 string set - humble apologies if they turn out to be not very good.

I've bought some of those "Alice" branded stings and found them to be the worst POS I've ever bought. I had a couple of packs of plain unwound strings, and the response on a magnetic pickup guitar was hopeless..changed back to my usual D'Addarios and my guitar sounded fine. They were just about OK on an acoustic or piezo equipped guitar, but I'm sworn off these cheapo "off brand" strings, and now stick to my usual Martin bronzewounds and D'Addario electrics. I get mine from cheapstrings.co,uk - depending on how many sets you buy, Martins from £3.60 a set, D'Addarios from £4.00 - anything else just isn't worth it.

  • Just snapped up a set of those 12 strings - good mix of strings there for various tunings

For classical strings I have been using these at £1.99 including postage http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Classical-Guitar-Strings-Hard-Tension-2-Free-... and they work well on my son's 1/2 and 3/4 size classicals.

I have bought some electric 9s and for £1.99 they too are good value http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electric-Guitar-Strings-9s-Super-Lights-2-Fre...

he also sells a set of acoustic 12 string sets at £2.95 - the cheapest I have seen anywhere (haven't tried these yet)http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12-String-Acoustic-Guitar-String-Set-Alice-10...

He is a good uk based seller.

    Hogs.

  • I have ordered a set - waiting for them to arrive.  BTW I put this on the Brits Group but might also be interesting to this group discussion.

"Hi everyone.  Just got one of those belt sanders Lidls are selling - OK it was cheap so I don't expect it to last a lifetime but really good piece of kit so far as I can see.  If you get one use it bench mounted and if you use it hand held don't get it anywhere the towel you are using between your wood and the bench to protect the wood!  (I'll say no more!) Yet to try it out for projecting  lumps of wood across the yard but I bet it does it perfectly.

Also got an electric planer for £20 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1505345430... - again cheap but I figure at that price you can chuck it away without feeling cheated if it lasts a few months.  Already managed to salvage 4 necks out of some crap looking walnut with it.  If you buy one - it comes with a 2 pin plug and an adaptor with a 1 amp fuse - replace adaptor or fuse (I used a 5amp) as it will blow as soon as you switch it on!"
