Ok in 2 months time it’s my Birthday yippee and Jan my wife asked me what I wanted.....
Well ive started writing my own songs ive even sent Shane one for the Christmas album.
But ive got an old-ish pc which includes an old sound card and I have latency problems so its
Not very good for multi track recordings.
So ive got a budget of Approx 400 GBP so should I -:
1 -: Buy a notebook plus cubase
2 -: Buy a Laptop plus cubase
3 -: Buy a 8 Track digital recorder
something on the lines of these photos.
What would you do , Pros n Cons all info helps
Also you help to spend someone elses money
Cheers Soul

So my advise is listen to everyones else's advice by all means but think hard about what you actually want to get out of it. You might need a new laptop anyway in a year or two so is it better to upgrade and get a soundcard now or grab the opportunity of an 8 track now and work on the "I need a new laptop" later? Are you getting the equivalent of GAS? Once you've figured what you want, I find it best to just let it all simmer in the pan for a while if it's an expensive purchase. Then see if any of it has died away leaving a clearer picture. The other thing is try to keep things simple. Sometimes the learning curve is too steep and things end up gathering dust.
Small world sort of.... I`m a big fan of The Art Of Noise and ive made about 6 albums of my own sample and paste type tunes using Sony Acid Pro.
now a bit like you i use my old 4 track tape recorder to plug in guitar/stompbox/ mic etc .
and also i have a sound blaster live.
if i record the whole song in one go it records fine, but when i start layering thats when i get latency problems.
Now this could be due to old drivers which i cant update (to tell you the truth i`m not sure whats causing it)
So this is the reason why i thought it would be great to have a good laptop or a digital recorder
dedicated sol for recording, and have my desktop for everything else.
As I recall its best to have the music computer JUST for the music, leave your email etc somewhere else. And for some reason it ran better on Windows 2000 than on XP.....
Ah, its all coming back to me now!
My only experience of this is trying to record guitar to Cubase or Wavelab (yes, I too lost many many months to Cubase back when I was recording house music. Yes, seriously.). Bloody nightmare unless you have the right gear.
As I recall the 'right gear' was a little box ya plugged in between the git and the puter - cost sub £100 back in the day?? Cant remeber what it was Im afraid. The only other kit I had was a wee 8 or 10 track mixing desk. Push everything on Cubase through the desk, mix and send back. Easy. Only other mod I had was a Soundblaster Live! soundcard.
Cool thing with Cubase is you can do all your backing tracks - Iv got acres of loops sounds and clips if ya can use them.
Downside is you stop going out and find yourself spending 3 months trying to get the kick sounding just so....
Iv no idea with modern stuff though, so this info is prolly well outdated - but my advice would have been to grab a copy of Cubase (5.1, VST, not the horrible modern versions - I have it if you want it) and save the rest of the money for therapy when it does your head in.... :o)
