To do a coil tap you can also use a push pull pot which as well as being a pot works as a switch when you pull the knob upwards.http://www.axesrus.com/axeElectronicsPots.htm sells them for £4.80
You need a double pole double throw "on-on" toggle switch to wire them properly for the various options. The other way is just to wire it as a straight humbucker with no coil switching options. The mini switches are readily available on ebay or Maplin.
I have just ordered one of these Artec mini-humbuckers to try out on my current 1st build - the chances are i will not use the coil tap wires, but using with a tele style switch/volume/tones arrangement...John would the coil tap wires be easy to work into this setup or would i need a special switch?
cheers! Steve

Are those Artec pickups? Artec is usually pretty decent for the money..not top spec but not top dollar..quite the opposite really. With these rail humbuckers they often come as 5-conductor so you can wire them with a switch for coil split/out of phase or whatever you fancy.
Hi Joun I was really fussy with the neck I made but take a look at what my son has made,he would come on here his self but can't get registered for some reason Mal
Can any one recermend and good teaching books or video's please

Hi guys thanks for your help, this will be the first cbg I have ever built and to be truthfull I can't even play but I have really enjoyed making it.I finished the neck today all but the frets and they will be here for the weekend and nearly finished the body.By the way I forgot to mantion it's a three string resonator Mal
ps I'v seen theses in e bay are they any good for cbg's StumbleCol said:
Hi Mal,
Isn’t it exciting, when you have nearly finished a CBG. To play an instrument that you have just made is a joy !
Anyway, I think most people use extra light guitar strings. If it is a 3 string, then use the top 3 strings G-B-E. If it is a 4 string then add the D string from the set as well. It does all depend on the build and what you want to do with it. I just made a new CBG and I used the 4 middle strings from a Extra Light set of Martin acoustic strings. So, I used the A-D-G-B strings and tuned it low to G-C-G-C, top C string is high, but I did this to play certain songs on it. That is the great thing about it, I built this guitar, to my design, for me and to fill a 3 song section in the live set.
If you are playing slide and the guitar is strong enough to take it, I would NOT use the 10 gauge top E from the set, I would up grade to 12 gauge. The 10 gauge can buzz a bit and sound a bit thin. My new guitar has a thick neck, made for me by Chicken Bone John and can take it, if you are not sure, start off with as light strings that you can get. I have done this, you may well find then, that the guitar does not sound or feel right to play. If this happens you will need to try out different gauges until the guitar feels right. You will know, when the gauge is right.
Please check out my 3 latest Vids to see my new CBG being put to good use.
although you live quite close (ish) to me I admit that I have not been following your work. With this in mind, what scale are you using and how many strings?
A lot will depend on the strength of the guitar and how high you will be able to take the tuning. A 'regular' 3 string tuning might be D, A, D and for a 4 string perhaps D F# A D (from lowest tuned string to highest tuned string). The make of string is of personal choice and you might use the D B and E string of a regular set of guitar strings to tune a 3 string to D, but everyone has their own preferences and ways of doing things.
I am sure that many people will be able to offer their ways of doing things. Looking forward to seeing photo's of the completed guitar.

If you check out seymour duncan wiring diagrams http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/ there are numerous ideas to chose from including this one
or even this one
Note that there are different types of 3way switches so if you try this one check you have the right lug arrangement on the switch.

David
