Ok I got this steel box that I was gonna use for the contest, but doesn't look like I'll make it unless I can find some new parts in a dumpster... anyway I want an electric pickup and a piezo pickup... I was told that the Box itself "Steel" will mess with the electric pickup... Any thoughts?

I thought i read that in the list, so i might just hold off... Also is the faucet holding up ok for a tuner? NICE Job

The pick up I ended up using on my Diddley Tank was homemade. It contains a small copper coil from a relay switch taped to the top of a magnet. Then I just stuck the magnet to the side of the metal can. Sounds great and I can still position it where I want just by moving it and letting the magnet stick.
Also this months contest for the dumpster diver CBG needs to contain a cigar box.I submitted the Tank but Shane told me another contest will be coming up with anything goes.

Technically, the steel contains iron and if the magnets are close enough to the steel it will become part of the magnetic field of the pickup and spread the field out. That being said, it could actually be a good thing tonewise. Unless you have some big huge powerful magnets (which are not good for other reasons), I can't imagine that the field would spread out that far anyway. The only thing you don't want is to have steel between the pickup and the strings because it could act as a shield.
Two pickups I can think of with steel in the design are Tele bridge pickups and a Harmony Stratotone Hershey Bar pickups. In both cases the steel is on the bottom only.
I would say no.......check out my pickups on the cheap video's here on the nation. I have had really good results with them...I have been using them on metal type of tops. The pickup I installed in my new license plate guitar just stuck on the inside to the top, the license plate where the strings travel. I think the magnets turn the whole licenes plate into a large magnet (stronger in some spots and not so strong in others) and it really helps the sound. Now, with this said, this is puting these pickups through a pedal of some sort. I use a zoom two for everything, but if I want clear, I just use a clear seting. It's just something to ramp up the signal. So, with this said, I think a pickup will be fine. I use the new button magnets from wal-mart for my transformer pickups. They are 4 bucks a pack. But, since you are going for the dumpster diving contest, you might be able to find the magnets in a old hard drive. I don't think they will be round, but they are magnets.
It will be fine..I've made loads of oilcan guitars using electric pickups, and there are plenty of expensive guitars around with steel fronts or even steel bodies (Zemaitis, Trusssart etc).
