Hey everyone. New here. I recently came across a great donor neck for a cigar box guitar project. I think it's 3/4 scale classical guitar that a neighbor was tossing out. I'd love to pair this neck up with a large cigar box. I want to build in a resonator, so I need a large box. A 14"-16" wide box would work great. I have few cigar shops in the area. What brands should I be asking for? What brands make such a large box? Thanks!

  • Thanks! A wine box sounds like a good option. I already know where I can go to find one too. Or I might opt to build one instead.
  • Hi Greg Mohrs,

A 14-16" wide cigar box? That large of a box? Then you should consider building a guitar using a wooden wine box. Occasionally, wines are sold in wooden boxes, usually 2 to 4 bottles per wooden box. Maybe a winery or a wine boutique of some kind could have them. If you can find one of those, it will likely have the dimensions you are looking for. Other kinds of boxes exist that may also have the dimensions you need. Just make sure the side you want to use as the sound board is pretty thin. Of course, with a resonator cone, and perhaps a pick-up (piezo or magnetic), you don't really need a super thin sound board.

If you can't find a box big enough for the resonator cone and neck/headstock assembly, you might consider building your own box. They aren't that hard to make, and there are a number of discussions on CBN about box making. Be sure to check out this one: "Home Made Resonator Boxes 101, v.2.0".

  • Question re-posted in the Building secrets forum. Sorry for posting it here originally.
  • Arturo Fuente makes a few long (wide) box's that would work. Some have a wood veneer on the face but the lids are thick which should be ok if you are going electric.  My advise would be to ask the people at the cigar store if you can go into the humidor and look at the box's on the racks, they may set one aside when it gets empty for you if you ask nice.
  • The largest Don Pepin Garcia boxes are almost the same size as those Las Cabrillas ones.  But you can't beat that sailing ship.
  • The largest cigar boxes i have found are the Las Cabrillas ones which are about 8" x 11" x  2" illustrated below,

other than that would suggest a wine bottle box, easily and cheaply available on the 'bay (-:
