  • Hi,bkentr here from south coast Oregon. Have spent many years with banjos. New to CBGs. First build is 85 % done, and i'm going to try 3-strings.
Have been recycling, fixing broken things for a long time. Those skills work well with CBGs,
For build #1, i needed to build a box, will use a dog bowl res, and a trimmed down ele guitar neck.
From the pictures here I can see that nearly anything I might do has been done.
i do love the pics, are there sound bytes to go with them?

  • Hi, Ramblin' Coone here, all the way from Belgium. Finished my first build on december 30 and on valentine's day I took her up to the stage. Already addicted and looking for the next builds, there will be a 3-string Quijaboard box guitar and maybe a 5 string
    • Kool, haven’t seen a Ouija board build for quite awhile! 😎 Chocolate in Belgium is so good!!!
    • haha, and don't forget our beers ;-)
  • Hi I'm Frank from Ontario Canada . After seeing my neighbours CBG I decided I wanted one. He offered to give me one, but decided if I was to have one (or more) I would build it myself . This may seem strange as I don't play any instruments tho I'm not too bad playing a radio. I hope to start by building a 3 string with no frets and a removable neck and trying to learn a bit of playing. AT this point I would start on a fretted replacement neck. Probably going to drive a lot of you crazy with questions so thanks in advance.
  • Hi, iam Howard from Minnesota, I like building cbg as a new hobby, I also like working with most types of wood . I have a box of real Cuban cigars and when I get good at making guitars I have mahogany board for the neck for that box, ps, I don’t smoke tobacco, I’ll give them to my brother I guess..just wanted the box…iam glad there is a forum for this hobby, I love looking at others people work , so cool, well make love not war, see ya
  • Hi may name is Rich and I live in Darlington, Co Durham, UK. I am in the process of building my workshop and will then start to build CBGs
  • Hi, I'm Philippe, I live in the north of France, I'm 55 years old and passionate about making cigar box guitars. Glad to have found a forum talking about this discipline, I wish you all hello. Using Google to translate my writings, I ask you to be lenient on approximate grammar or syntax.
    • Bienvenue Philippe, hope to see more of you 😁
  • Okay, here goes.I was asked to make a one string bass guitar for someone with a severe head trauma that limits motor skills. Using the lowest string for a 5 String bass set.then tuned to a C. 34 in scale. 20 frets. Poplar base 2.5 inches wide, 38in long. ,then I glue a 24 in neck, with a 1/4in fingerboard with 20 frets. Any input would be appreciated as I am clueless when it comes to bass guitars

Better late than never...

After joining this forum in 2014, I finally have my 1st CBG which my wife bought for me at the weekend (a 4 string from Frethound Custom Guitars).  I was never going to get around to building one. Now to learn to use a slide.WhatsApp Image 2024-04-14 at 16.53.40.jpeg

My 1st CGB

Just finished my 1st freeless acoustic CBG, based on the #Glenn Watt design. 31inch neck, 25inch scale, 42/32/24 gauge strings. Sycamore neck and a 200mm x 180mm x 45mm box made from 7mm ply. Neck finished with Osmo oil wax with fret marked on using pyrograph. 2 x 12mm sound holes. As you might notice it's a corrie-fisted one (left handed to those non-Scots!) Got it tuned now, just got to learn how to play it!!IMG_20240116_153022.jpg

Hi, y'all.

Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia.  I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while, and this is my first post.  I'm a musical social butterfly: in addition to being a lifelong singer, I seem to collect instruments and play some, pretend to learn others, and "just gaze at the pretties" for still others.  I want to get back into playing fiddle, and money's tight, so here I am.  I plan…

I Am Blaming All of You with YouTube Channels.

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain dulcimers, diddly bows, canjos and "strumstick" type instruments. I am primarily a bass player but stringed instruments of all types hold a fascination for me. And then the injury happened. I sustained nerve damage in my left arm that would no longer allow me to fret anything. my had was useless. I…
