  • this is a great video Keni. I just started learning to play guitar about 13 weeks ago. I love the sound of slide dobro & decided that I needed to hear that sound. I decided to buy a roundneck reso, made my own glass slide & signed up for weekly lessons. I'm able to play 3 songs and I have made up a ton of slide blues tunes just by experimenting. I practice my lessons for about an hour every day, usually at the same time. I practice the songs to learn the chords and then I break out the slide...that's my reward for the hard stuff. My only problem is that my teacher taught me drop tuning because of a Rocco Deluca song I was trying to learn and now I'm totally addicted to that sound. I've found myself playing for hours with the slide in that tuning. Now I'm looking at making a cigar box guitar-so I don't have to drop tune my reso all the time. I love every minute of my guitar and it makes life a little happier for me
  • Thank you Hip Bone. Yes, it definitely make sense to me. I appreciate your personally sharing. I guess "performance" art by it's nature has to be geared toward other's appreciation. Especially magic (fool the audience). What you choose to present it up to you. I like everyone else ping - pong. A kind of hate - love relationship with my music. This is normal and healthy. You don't want to suppress emotions or get imprisoned by them. I think goals are important to keep us focused. When you lose sight of what is your ambition, it gets rather difficult to stay the course. I like what you said. I can relate. Art is definitely all about the "Big Picture". Like Life. Nothing is permanent. Constantly changing. How do you respond? Enjoy.
  • Commercial Art vs Personal Validation and Affirmation... I have pondered in my old age of 44 why we do things, as a former magician for 30 plus years I am wondering why I did "Magic" I mean it's great fun, I was able to meet new people and was able to bring happiness to many people.... All through works. As I get older, Married with now 2 kids.. I see more and more people of all ages doing stuff for Validation and Affirmation in their own life... . Then I ask why.... Maybe because parents got a divorced when they were young and needed Validation and Affirmation...YES we all need this.... but what is the proper way of this happening? I mean my dad never seen my first house do to dieing of ALS, were I live or anything... So do I make it up by trying to grab this from a talent I might have? Do I impress others like I did for so many years to get this. Or should I just Love my wonderful wife and kids and that is enough.. Magic is an Art form centuries old, many people thought these men had Power or something they themselves didn't have... Which they did... The Stage for 5 minutes.... Now can I sit at home and do a few tricks and enjoy this by myself as art? I should be able to... but it's very hard... As I try to learn to play a 3 string I wonder why..I love the Blues, I know I'll most likely never be really good... but can I just play and enjoy this new Art Form or Hobby for what it is? This is an area I'm not comfortable in... and No I will never get Validation or Affirmation through this hobby... maybe that's why I choose it.... and yes it is a challenge to sit at home, messing up every note... OK sound and enjoy...... As for playing for others.... probably not gonna happen... As for Magic for others... I've been done for 10 years..... Now maybe it's time to just enjoy a new personal perspective on Life, Art, a new baby and even enjoy a dirty diaper.... I Hope this make a little sense.
  • Thank you for your comment. You open up a great area for discussion because as you know it is impossible to cover this topic in a short video. I don't want to sound impersonal, but real art expresses a personal perspective, a concept, an idea. If part of your persepective includes considering the perspective of others, then you express this too. Art is not always intended to please others. It is also used to get a reaction. Make people think. When you start catering to the audience, for fame or profit, this is a form of commercial art. Many great artists never rose to notoriety because they were so controversial. They were not marketable. Although, connecting with others on a personal level is very empowering. My intention was to encourage players to be true to themselves. Stick to their guns and not let others stand in the way of their art. Some will love it, others will hate it. Don't get caught up in this. Stay focused on developing the art. I appreciate your imput. Enjoy.
  • One small point: I don't completely agree with the idea that "...people like me, people don't like me ... real artists don't care."

It's easy to write songs with deep personal symbolism, or free, formless, dissonant compositions that nobody will appreciate except for me. That's cool if I'm sitting on my couch, but as soon as I want to share it with one other person, I need to consider them as a silent partner in my art. It's a challenge to be heartfelt and original, yet still accessible to your intended audience. IMHO, achieving that balance is the goal of the "true artist."

This message is good though and helpful to me. Your main point is so true... we should consider the big picture and what we want out of our musical efforts. That's easy to forget. Thanks!
  • Thank you Hip Bone for your comment. Enjoy.
  • Always Great.. thanks
  • Thank you for your comment. Yes, it is always, Mind over Matter. You can't force it. Enjoy.
  • Thank you John for your comment and sharing. Trying to do too much is like a bee going from flower to flower. You never really stay long enough to get the nectar. Doing less actually becomes more. Staying focused on one path and not going off onto to many tangents leads to the goal. I agree, we all have to be reminded about the simple truths of life from time to time. Enjoy.
