In this photo you can see how the neck looks when smoothed out. I later decided to narrow the headstock as well, since with hand-tools, it would be easier to build a narrow slotted headstock rather than the wider flat headstock of the traditional banjo. Another factor was that I was (and still am) out-of-stock of tuners with the string hole near the tip of the tuner shaft. The headstock is slanted downward by a 12 degree angle using a scarf joint.
