My latest project is a cane / walking stick with built in 3-string cigar box stick dulcimer. The stick is still 3 or 4 inches shy of the ground. Hoping to find an old warn out walking stick with anti-slip rubber foot I can cut and attach to the end of this instrument, otherwise I'll have to jury-rig something else.

I like your idea about making that last 3- or 4-inch piece easily detachable. I had been thinking of using a dowel and glue to make a strong permanent attachment. I've already drilled the hole for the dowel in the "headstock" (or should I call it the "tailstock" -- the part with the three tuners). Maybe I can still rig-up something that will work and can be deached. I'll have to give it some more thought. Thanks for the idea.
I think a 4" noter or slide might be a bit cumbersome. Maybe a small bow. Just kidding. I have no experience using a bow, and it would have to be quite short and stout to work well at the bottom of my cane.

Looks good, Rand! How about a detachable support at the bottom? You could unscrew it when you sit down and use it as a slide or noter.
