Volume knobs (bought as stop ends)

I thought these might do as volume knobs. They are 10mm stop ends for plumbing which means that they are 12mm on the outside. That makes them quite small, but also quite discreet (in as much as shiny copper is ever discreet). They come with a makers mark in the centre. I am trying to decide how to work them. I could leave them as they are and just mount them on ebony, I could machine off the ends to remove the mark, or I could drill the ends and have the ebony showing through as a black dot. I think that the last option appeals most so far.

  • Good idear.

  • Hi Tony.

Great idea although, being a copper fetishist, I would probably go for these.

  • Hi Dion.

Thanks for the comment. I like the idea. I'm not planning to have a tone pot. Only two volume ones for the two pickups. Maybe I need P for Piezo and M for the Mag. Anyway, good thinking. Thanks.

  • cool idea John!! maybe you can hit a "V" or "T" for volume and tone pots..copper is easy to handle when heated ;)
  • Now that idea sounds high style,  high detail and cool.  Very much your style.
  • Hi Uncle John.

My thought was to drill out the closed end, thereby removing the lettering. Mount them on an ebony dowel, tuned thinner at the end to fit the hole. Cut the ebony off flush with the top of the copper (probably slightly domed). That would put a black dot in the centre. I could even drill a small hole in the ebony and put a copper dot with the same copper ring main cable I use for side fret markers. Polish the lot up and off you go. Give me a week or so and we will see.

Thanks for giving your insight into this.

    All the best.

    John

  • John, those look good for a rustic look, but don't seem right for your highly detailed work.  I am curious to see if and how they work out.
  • Hi there gentlemen.

In fact I think that all options are valid depending on the style of the instrument. For the one I am doing now I will probably do the ebony dot idea, but for a more rough and ready one then the stamp would be better (and not polishing them too well either).

    Thanks for the comments.

  • Leaving the existing ends on them adds to the home brewed look though...and has more mojo I think.
