Back view. Double aluminium necks with three strings on one and a bass string on the other. Fake Cohiba box. Two piezo pickups. The designe is modular. The wooden ends can be taken out and replace with different ones giving various stringing options. The box is a very poor copy of a Cohiba one and is really quite rough in places. It looks pretty from a distance (a couple of miles is ideal).

  • Mine does indeed have comb joints. But I'm not sure that's necessarily conclusive proof that yours is a fake. Anyway, I suppose the bottom line for our purposes is whether it sounds any good as a guitar - and yours clearly does.
  • Hi Mark.

Does yours have comb joints (sometimes incorrectly called dovetail)? Mine doesn't. Just butted up. So do you think it could be a genuine one after all?

  • John, yup I think you were looking at the guitar I meant. It looks better in the photo than it actually is in reality. That Cohiba box is really quite rough (considering it contained some very expensive cigars). The lid was slightly warped and didn't fit very well - either the box or the lid were not perfectly rectangular. However it is quite a strongly constructed box and I managed to turn it into a fairly rugged guitar.

There are two distinct and separate Cohiba companies making cigars, the orginal cuban one and an American-owned outfit in the the Dominican Republic. My box was a genuine cuban one. I think the ones you see made into CBGs by our transatlantic friends are generally Dominican - it seems like they have neater boxes but not such good cigars.

  • Hi Mark.

Do you mean the 3 string one with the 7 sound holes all grouped together. That looked very nice. Possibly this one looks better in the photo. In fact it's mainly when you feel along the edges that you notice how rough it is. However it seems to make quite a decent sound, and that is the main thing.

    All the best.

  • Actually that box looks better than the real Cohiba one that I used for a 3-string CBG a couple of years back.
  • Hi Bluesheart.

Thank you very much. It was relatively straightforward to make and a lot of fun to play.

    All the best.

  • Forget the minor imperfections (easy for ME to say...LOL). Let's HEAR this instrument! CHEERS for posting!
  • Hi Glenn and Dan.

Thank you very much for the comments. Very much appreciated.

Dan. I'm sure the imperfections hardly show up at all from where you are. Talk to you soon.

    Thanks again.
