Hi Kristen, ya the dots! Those lousy dots. I like the frets in though. That way I can get my dots where I want them though I don't measure. I just do my best eyeballing. No matter what I do, the dot holes drift on occasion due to grain and a fickle drill. I don't have a drill press. I like the strings on when I do the dots. Then my dots can be positioned where my fingers won't be fretting on top of them.
Yeah I'll take a pic, I cut mine away too (with a router) to allow the soundboard to vibrate, and also I gave a bit more depth at the fingerboard overlay area so it wouldn't clamp down on the soundboard either there. I just finished making the neck thinner at the screw end so the neck bends back a bit more as well. Right now I'm also putting in MOP fret marker dots. Quite annoying after the frets are already put in, but doable and they're turning out nicely. Next time- dots before the darned frets - I learned my lesson! :)
That's what I do too. Rather than cut a hole for the butt of the neck, I just butt it against my tail block an put one screw in from the rear. I cut away the neck passthrough so it doesn't touch the top of the box so it will vibrate better. I use my bandsaw for this...
