Matt - I have not put any truss rods in my 6-stringers. I have only built 2 6-stringers, the second one's picture will be posted soon. This one has a lot of wood inside the box partly because of the Fender style bridge with the strings going through the body and partly to reinforce the through the box part of the neck. So not too much acoustic sound without amplification. I also use super light strings to help reduce the tension on the neck. It has both a humbucker and a piezo pickup with a 3-way switch.
