The carving is actually done with a wood burner. Hard to tell with the ebony stain I used, but it was on hand and I liked the look with the silver box.
The tuners aren't the best, but they were cheap and look good. Came from a set of 12 string strip tuners (6 per side). I cut them apart with a hacksaw in pairs of two. Still got 8 more to play with. Whole set was under $10 including shipping on eBay.
Wes - the aluminum is easy to work with. I got a piece of scrap window trim at work that they were gonna toss. I could probably make 50 more with the one piece I have. I just use my dremel and a file to buff it out and remove the "paint". Just make sure to saw it a little higher than you need to have a little "play" room.
