Silver Scarab CBG

This 3 string CBG was the first I designed over the summer. It has a C B Gitty Snake Oil pickup and oak neck. The tuners are Ping. I created a custom image, printed it on card stock, and used Mod Podge and acrylic sealer to apply it to the box. I'm a ceramic artist, and I like creating custom surface finishes. It's not that I don't like a traditional cigar box, I simply enjoy the customization.

  • That is awesome. Love the artwork, what depth!

  • In the smaller pic your pick-up resembles the lens on a helment. That's what confused me at first but no question now, it's a big ole bug.

  • I like the giant bug! I love playing more than I can express. I have a wonderful song circle to play with. We fly away sometimes. Music brings out my most creative spirit. Play that big bug Janis!
  • Hey Dave! Great to meet you. Your creations are truly masterful. I really enjoy your wood carving details. The piece with the bird peaking out grabbed me. I love it! We certainly have some things in common; however, I'm just a newbie with the CBGs unlike you with all the amazing stringed instruments you've created. But I'm loving the experience of playing something that I made. It gives me warm fuzzies.

  • Maybe this helps Gary & Carl? Maybe not. Cell phone pics... If not, well, welding helmets might bring warmer feelings anyway than giant bugs! ;) 306520028?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

  • Hello potter, music player and builder. This piece is wonderful. Thanks for showing. I've been a potter for many years. Now I make stringed instruments too.
  • I too saw a welders helment and I have my glasses on. Oh well!

  • Uncle John, you're really kind! :) I appreciate the slide tip, and I'll practice it today. I have a lot to learn on slide finesse. Just a few months ago I had so little knowledge of slide I thought I still needed to hold the strings down to the neck with the slide like playing chords on a 6 string. Hahah!

  • Holey buckets, I have NO PLAYING TIPS FOR YOU.   Good stuff.    Wait, one tip.   Your sllde sounds great, but it is good to learn to drag your index over the strings to reduce unwanted fret and slide noise.   Welcome and we hope to see more builds and vids.

  • Thanks y'all! I'm such a newbie to CBGs, and I thank you for your kind words. This community is awesome!

Carl, the knob is an old knurled control box knob with set screw that I got from Radio Shack about 12 years ago. It came in a 2 pack. I used 1 knob on the power soak box I built for my Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp back then, and I've had the extra knob sitting around all this time. It finally found a good home.

Uncle John, I'm having a great time playing! I've played 6 string for fun for about 16 years, but I'm new to blues, slide, and CBGs. I have much to learn, but it's really fun. This has sort of re-lit my musical fire. I don't have any samples of my CBG playing except for this very short riff I recorded as an intro to a pottery tutorial video. I played it on the Silver Scarab CBG through my Fender Mustang 1 v2 amp.

On Wednesday I made my first solo build of a diddley bow, and made a little video for my friends which I just posted.
