Yeah, it just kind of occurred to me as I scratched my head after cutting the nut slot, wondering what piece of wood to put there. No doubt that scrap of axe handle was staring me in the face.
Thanks John. Simple design but pretty cool results I think. The bridge is cut from a different part of the axe handle. Used a grinder on the ends of the bridge for the final fit. A side effect is that the heat of grinding hardened the bridge wood.

That small detail, the nut also coming from the neck (axe) made a big difference in the effect. I would not have thought of that.
