little by little i sanded down the strut until it was the right size. you can see how far i was out by just how big that block at the end is. i decided that i didn't want to actually sand down the body after all, so i managed to sand the neck and raise the foot until it was at the right angle. now all the adjustments can be done with the nut and the bridge.
