I agree - are used to make them out of the inserts that come in the boxes but that was a lot more fabrication... and then one day I used to pick guard I had laying around and decided to start ordering it, it's fairly inexpensive and looks really good! I cut it out with a skill saw and shape it with a sander.
I could get them too, but would not no how to make that nice cover up plate. I think maybe Gitty sells wood ones. Good use of it- even if your union there is smooth.

Mighty fine neck to box cover plate. Man, I need to hide most of those neck to box unions on mine! Nice close up photo.
