Failure is always an option.. I tried some crappy paint remover for the old finish and after hours of scraping, I lost it. The death was quick and painless..

I have just stripped one for conversion with a random orbital sander and fine abrasive paper.
I tried paint stripper but it had not effect that I could see at all!
