The story on the amp is a bit sad actually. A friend had the Hi-Fi in their house but had ripped out the speaker and made it into a bar. They then gave it to us. It had the amp in it still, but no speaker. I pulled the amp and want to make it a bass and guitar amp. Sadly he got rid of the speaker, which from what I have read on the Internet, was a 15" speaker also used in early ampeg bass amps... Now that would have been sweet.
Your Hi-Fi rig should work better than my little phono amp. My amp wants to see a crystal phono cartrage on the other end of the line. (impedence mis-match) Very little volume on it's own but, as long as I stick a pedal in front of it to force the issue it cranks plenty of tube tone! Go for it!
