Thanks Bull Run. Nice work on your builds as well! I've been through Bristow many times what with Jiffy Lube Live being right there. I moved to WV about 11 years ago and still remember the feeling of relief while heading west on 66 and seeing Manassas in the rear view!
very nice!! been itching to build a fiddle. I'm with you and dave--- I can play enough to know when they are set up right, but prefer to have a pro play my gits and see that look on their face when they realize how great they play!!!!
I think my greatest pleasure and satisfaction has come when other good musicians pick up one of my boxes or flutes and blows me away. Then I know I'm doing the right thing.
I'm working at getting sound samples of all these. Hopefully sometime this week. I think this close grained redwood is quite similar to spruce and was pretty happy with the overall tone even though my playing is still a work in progress. Last week at a jam I had a couple of good fiddlers try it and it really sung. This is the first one I've made with my own box but I'm sure I'll do more.
Wow, that is absolutely gorgeous. It looks so much like the fiddles shown in One Man's Trash. The very first ones from the Civil War. I'm finding the tone from making my own boxes is very good. If I use good tone wood and get the bridge well out onto the box, it will sound great. I'll bet this one sounds very sweet.
