Pot full of troubles

Gees! Sometimes they go good and some times they fight me. This one is pot lid number two and the second half of the build it is fighting me.Most recently was putting silicone on the lips of the under lid to glue it down and then finding it did not fit because the pickup was mounted too close to the lid's place. No clearance. Then one of the screws holding down the mag pup stripped as I hurriedly tried to remove it! :(It seems sometimes the building part of the hobby is about overcoming things - be they poor planning, screw ups or just stuff that does not work right.I still have good hopes for this one. It will be a few days before I have time to work on it again.

  • Thanks, guys. I think it was worth the difficulties.

  • Very neat.  Glad you were able to (mostly) wrestle it into submission.  "Pot Full of Perseverance"!  ;-)

  • Looks great Uncle John! Very nice overall look. It's got Unc all over it!

  • It's done.   Strung it up this morning and it was still fighting me a bit.  One economy tuner slipped.  I changed it and one other tuner that was used and old.

I hoped not to need sting guides.  It needed string guides for the inside tuners.  I used screws.

Action: balanced for fingering and slide.  Intonation: good.   Acoustic tone: warm, metallic and good.   Volume: good, but not as loud as my other pot lid.

This one is open E (EBEG#)  - the 4 big strings from a set of 6.   I used electric strings on this one and acoustic strings on pot lid 1, which is in open G.  That could be the difference.

Plugged in: Excellent.  I like these bass mag pups from Gitty.

Plan:  Find out what songs I can do in open E.  My usual key to sing in is G and my vocal range is not large.   No building for a while.   Go back and tweak and improve a bunch of gits and maybe clean up the shop.

  • Me too, Dave.  I don't believe that crap  about it causing baldness.

  • I like the dip myself. Shropshire sheep dip. Chits and dip.
  • Oh sheep chit, Wes and Dave.  I just saw what you are talking about.  Haven't you heard of sheep metal tail pieces?   They give a wild and wolley sound.

  • Sheep, pigs, Uncle John does it all. Like Wes said (sheepishly), Unc's baaad to the bbbone!
  • Thanks, Steve, Pick and Andries.  I love the big tenors right now and think I will continue to love em.   I have one DGBE, Pot Lid number one in GDGB and this one is planned to be DADF# and or EBEG#.

The plan (hope) is to get this one working well and then stop building for a while and go back and improve a bunch of old builds.
