Found these at the thrift shop yesterday for $2.50. Not sure what they were originally for but I think with just a little modification I can make a cool little fret press out of them. A grooved brass or aluminum face on the upper caul (stays parallel at all times) and a wooden top on the lower bed would do the trick I think? It's worth a try.

this is a crimper for the connectors that go on ribbon cables.,.,usually not cheap.,.,but a great find!! At work we use an arbor press for the same task.,.,,.

My first thought upon seeing the thumbnail pic was "There's a nifty little fret press".
