The 42-gauge wire comes from a spool on the floor. The red and blue thing are small wood blocks wrapped in felt. The wire runs between them, and by adjusting the red c-clamp, I can set the tension of the wire. There should be just enough tension that the wire goes on without wrinkling, and not so much that the wire breaks, similar to a fishing reel. The felt blocks also smooth out any twists that form after the wire leaves the spool.
