I'd glue it in place - use superglue and you can easily snap it off if you need to replace it. Slotting the nut will be much easier if it's attached to the guitar.
Here is half the key in place as the nut. It will be too high if using the full height key, but can be taken down with a file or upside-down belt sander. The slots for the strings still need to be filed in. I may add a threaded insert and piece of brass to mechanically hold the nut in place without adhesive. Right now it is just sitting there loose.
