I encourage you to contact that guy at www.roadtoadmusic.com . He was willing to work on custom sets for me on a "full scale" bass... I think it was 30".... it worked out fine... I think ted crocker ended up with it....
Thanks much for the responses - this is very helpful. I am definitely looking to put a piezo in here - like my guitars - and add an active, preamp/bass boost like found in Ashbory basses. I guess I could go with the string-sets they sell for bass uke. The scale length is a bit shy of what I'd like - about 30". :-)
I may go with sticking a rail under the fretboard, and trying Rotosound black tape-wounds. I think that the tension is still pretty low with these...
PU cord is not sticky and is very easy to play... sourcing in the problem... you can get strings of PU from www.roadtoadmusic.com they're pricy, but the owner will work with you on custom sets... I've gotten samples for the manufacturers, but they won't sell in less than super bulk quantities.... I'm not ready to throw down $ 5,000 for 3 lifetimes worth of inventory....
I'll pull my notes on cord dia. later....

ahh the elastic properties of PU does not make it good for acoustic instruments.... amped thru a good piezo setup they give a great upright bass thump/thump sound....
Can you tell me about the PU cord? Is it "stickey" to play? I no on Ashbory silicone-stringed basses, players talc their hands.
Where did you source the cord? I want to build a "Doodle Bass" style instrument - but I'm picky! I don't want multi colours for the different strings for lawn trimmers. String trimmer monofilament for EADG would be in .095, .080, .065 and .050 sizes (inches). What are the PU cord diametres?

Thanks for any help in my extensive questions!
Thanks, I built it. Short scale (19", true low "E") uses PU (polyurethane cord) for string.
