On my first build I used open gear tuners and I didn't know the significance of mounting them correctly, but I did have the issue, I figured the same would hold true for the closed gear tuner. Its good to know they work either way. Thanks Josh.
I put them upside down because I thought it looked more interesting on a quasi-asymmetrical head than having everything running along the same line.
I can't see how this would introduce tuning instability. It's just a simple worm gear after all. Did you try this with high quality machines? My experience has been that if you have at least a moderately decent tuning machine on your guitar it'll hold fast no matter which way you pull on it.
This is where I get confused, the two turners on the left are mounted upside down, when I have done this I found that under tension it puts too much pressure on the peg putting it into a kink sometimes, and when tuning I can feel the instability of the machine head. Is this just an issue I notice?
