On the workbench - Rusty Shovel

Had a friend request this shovel guitar. I got the rust finish done. Got it drilled for pots, jack and tailpiece. Bridge and pickup are all that's left before stringing it up.

  • Yes indeed. That video recently went around Facebook and shortly after my inbox blew up with people wanting one. This one is for a buddy of mine who is in a band.

  • Nice going, Brent!  I'm sure you've seen this, but just in case......

  • That's what I am going to try first. Sort of a mount on top option. I would definitely be better off with one of the flat pickup varieties but I wanted to give a more commodity option a try first. I'll definitely throw some pics up when its finished. Even if it crashes and burns...

  • That's a beefy bit of kit. Perhaps you could mount it on wood carved to the shape of the metal but the same size as the surround. It would be solid but hard work. Personally I would use slim bolts running through metal tubing and leave the rest open.

Post a picture when it's done.

  • I don't think I will. I will be hand soldering the pots so I will just keep the wires short. I should be able to easily secure everything out of the way using gaffing tape. That's the plan anyway. The big challenge is going to be mounting the pickup. I am going to use a quad rail humbucker.

  • Thats brave.

I have an antique bedpan that I want to turn into a slide 3 stringer but I keep putting it off until I am absolutely sure I won't end up with a pile of antique scrap.

Are you going to cover the back?
