Oak tops!

I’ve been accumulating likely-looking hardwood for months, from a guy in Wales who makes bespoke kitchens and the like. These tops are both English oak, arriving planed all round and in the dimensions you see. The one on the left is proper tonewood, being only 3mm thick, and sits on a 30mm deep poplar ply box. Sanded, oiled, and then waxed, it was given a very simple f-hole, a Gitty walnut flying Kay bridge, and strung pretty heavy with 4-5-6 Martin acoustic strings. Tuned EBE, it sound awesome. However, I have other acoustics, so this is being given to my niece, and the chap she’s marrying on Friday, as a wedding gift. You could say that the oak is symbolic- as long lasting as we’d like the marriage to be. I’ve even had a little brass plaque made up to fit on the heel of the neck. Even if it doesn’t get played much, it’ll look well cool on a wall.

  • Hi Daniel- If you’re UK based I can send you the name of the guys I get this stuff from. If you’re outside the UK I doubt they’ll export... Here’s a tip though- look up people making bespoke kitchen furniture, cos they’re likely to have offcuts. Failing that, just google “3mm hardwood” like I did!

  • this wood rules. can you send me some?
