L-R: nickel plated steel spacers, bronze tinted spacers, copper union. Sources Lowe's and TSC. Average price for steel $2, price of copper less than $1.They all work as well or better than those $8 things at the music store.

I really like the steel ones. I'm with John on the copper, too soft and kind of drags on wound strings (though I guess that could be a good thing) and turns you finger green.I like the heft of the steel too.
Oh! The price and looks are right. I would like to try the brass looking ones. I have tried copper sleeves like that and did not like them much. They were kind of 'grippy' did not slide as free as I like.
