Need a little help here.

Working on my first neck for my first ever CBG. I did the straight head stock method. I'm wondering if I can add a fret board to this or will it be too high with a fret board? Right now the playing surface of the neck is 1 cm or 13/32 above the head. If I add a fretboard it will bring it to just under 3/4 of an inch above the head. I'm not sure if this will mess up how the stings will go from the tuners to the nut.

  • Thanks Brydon. You can tell, I've done this often. Many ways to skin a cat.
  • I would guess that yes you could add a fret board, but some Fender style string trees would be a bonus.   On the other hand, that maple neck should be strong enough as is.  Good wishes.

  • All good suggestions from Dave!

  • Thanks guys. I think because of the angle. (Which I sort of screwed up) I'm going to have to fret the maple instead of adding a board.
  • You can do it. Try and place the tuners high on the head for less string angle. Also use string tie downs to get the string down to the head before it goes to the shaft of the tuner. Or you can slot the headstock and go in from the sides with the tuner shafts. Or you can laminate a nice wood surface onto the head to get it higher. You would then take off wood from the underside of the head to keep the head thin enough for the tuner shafts.
  • hey you will get increased string tension there and the angle will make it hard to have more than 1-2 winds on the tuners without them wrapping all over the place. A strong string tree will be needed xD
