I used ordinary toothpicks for the side inlays... I didn't want the inlays to really jump out like plastic would, and the toothpick idea was a good one. They are a little more subtle than plastic, they fit the scheme of the guitar better, and they actually kinda "melted" when I sanded the neck, so they really kinda blend in very nicely (see album for more details on this guitar).
