Name That Wood

Here's one for you wood spotters out there. I've been given some chunks of this - the other 6 are about 2 feet long each. I wet it to show the grain. It's heavy. This piece (16" x 8.5" x 2") weighs 9.25 lbs, which is nearly 60 lbs per cubic foot !!Any clues on what it is - mahogany ?

  • Looks like Mahogany to me. Some Mahogany is very dense. Others are light.

  • No, it doesn't smell of anything in particular, just sawdust. It looks quite old so it's well seasoned.

  • Looks like Bloodwood...does it smell like spices when you cut it?

  • I just had a go at cutting this and it didn't seem too bad. I only made a small cut but it felt softer than oak.

  • well, they're nice lumps and i wouldn't mind having them , but i don't think there is a Mahogany tree  . is that just a name for red hardwood . the last bit i had was really lightweight and was really easy to shape , it being so soft. any other suggestions.
