Here's one for you wood spotters out there. I've been given some chunks of this - the other 6 are about 2 feet long each. I wet it to show the grain. It's heavy. This piece (16" x 8.5" x 2") weighs 9.25 lbs, which is nearly 60 lbs per cubic foot !!Any clues on what it is - mahogany ?

well, they're nice lumps and i wouldn't mind having them , but i don't think there is a Mahogany tree . is that just a name for red hardwood . the last bit i had was really lightweight and was really easy to shape , it being so soft. any other suggestions.

Looks like Mahogany to me. Some Mahogany is very dense. Others are light.
No, it doesn't smell of anything in particular, just sawdust. It looks quite old so it's well seasoned.
Looks like Bloodwood...does it smell like spices when you cut it?
I just had a go at cutting this and it didn't seem too bad. I only made a small cut but it felt softer than oak.
