I decided to add a piezo pickup with a volume control and a jack which I had purchased last summer from C.B.Gitty. After finishing the instrument and hooking it up to a guitar, I see the so called "volume control" just adds hum. Maybe I need a preamp to better match the impedance of the piezo pickup with the input of the guitar amp. I'll have to mess around with it some more.
