Ha! Originally the thick string didn't have a nut and the thick string's tuning shaft was acting as the nut for the thin string. Worked fine tuned to G but I thought that was too much tension for the thin neck, it would probably bow over time so I lowered the tuning to E. That wasn't enough tension and the thin string buzzed against the thick string's shaft. So I added the string tree as an upside-down nut.
