i used to damage a few trying to get the pins the right way but they always popped out..! i leave it stepped on this one but i think the trick is to leave a gap beneath the lid, so the string at the ball end can find a space to bend and get pushed to a side by the pin... holding the it in place. it also depends of the diameter of the pins, mine are about 3/16"... so i found a drill bit a little smaller so when i pressure down the pin, i get the results. hope this helps..!
cheers so is the hole stepped inside with the 3 drills the smoothed off to give the taper or do you leave it stepped. I'm very interested in using pins on a ukulele I'm building but I'm scared I'll muck it up

what do you use to drill the holes for the bridge pins.
Are they tapered?
