lapsitarcimer

a cbg changed in midstream to a dulcimer strung...something or other. Frets are toothpicks since I hesitate to part with $35 for a fretsaw. I might change them to plastic toothpicks - no shredding or splinters!

  • there is expert instruction on nation....   I am a hack builder, but here's what I do.  I cut deeper than the fret seat using a square to try to keep square.  I cut the fret.  I use a belt sander to dress them.   I dip the fret seat in wood glue.  I tap seat with a rubber mallet.  And I then clamp using a wood block.  Then I often have to come back and file or replace a fret or two.
  • Thanks Uncle John!  I once tried a hacksaw and coping saw, but I couldn't get most of them to stay in.  So I figured if you don't have a blade that's the precise width, it can't be done.  Should the fret be cut as deep as the wire goes or less deep to be hammered in?  Is gluing with something like Loc-tite a good idea?  I'm getting better at this stuff, but still have a lot to learn.
  • Looks good Chi Bob.  Hey, I do pretty good with a hack saw and square for cutting frets.
