  • We were homeported in Newport, RI and worked the North Atlantic DEW Line. Before I boarded they also did some pickets between Key West and Cuba snatching refugee boat people out of the water. Mills was scraped in 1975. After ORI in Gitmo I was transferred to the J.P. Kennedy, Jr. DD-850 which is today a museum ship in MA. Served as an RM-2. Was on the JPK for the Cuban Missile Crisis, in the thick of it. Interesting days back then and quite the adventure!

  • Hi Larry. Good to hear from you. I spent my 3 years all on the Lansing. Home ported at Pearl Harbor. Part of the DEW line up towards Adak, AK and also
spent some time chasing Russian Missle Tracking ships around. Ended up as Weapons Officer and mothballed her in Bremerton, WA. She has since been hauled out and scrapped. Kind of sad.
  • I served for a time on the USS Mills DER-383. Did two pickets in the North Atlantic off Iceland and 9 weeks in Gitmo after a winter in the Boston shipyards. There aren't many of us DER sailors!
