To be honest, Richard, I am not sure. This was made in 2009, but I think I used painters tape also. Maybe I just lucked out. They have a fairly new tape out I think called Frog Tape that you should try. It is green. I used it on a kayak I built to put on an accent line and it worked great. After you put it on you can run a damp cloth or sponge over it and it makes a seal along the edge. Then you stain or paint.
Yours is beautiful, I love the tailpiece! It reminds me of a pirate ship! I notice you stained the bottom of the box (top of the uke). How do you go about that? I also stained my uke, & we both used the same box too. Did you use painters tape around the edges? I did, but had a problem with seepage from the stain under the tape which partially stained the paper edge. I'm looking at yours, & I don't see any discoloration of the paper edges. I could use any & all tips you may have. Thanks!
