Inside reso with can

If I make another reso with a tin can I will probably cut more of the can off and use a bigger box. I left about an inch of the can side wall attached to the can bottom. (except for the parts I cut and filed away to clear the neck where it passes through the box.

  • Hi JP,

I am happy to be proved wrong... means I learned something. Something that sometimes is difficult to do with my thick scull. Now I am even more tempted to do a tuna can reso CBG. I'll be thinking about the design a bit, maybe substitute a pair of hardwood dowels for the neck thru so I can save on a bit of neck wood for other uses. I brought a small kit of hand tools with me from China, so I should be able to build 2 or 3 CBGs this summer. Already bought an 8' by 1.5" by 0.75" length of birch (or <$10 from Home Depot) to use for 2 or 3 necks (depending on how conservatively I use the wood). I like 20" scale lengths, so I should be able to get 3 CBGs built, and at least one will have a resonator. I have also purchased 5 cigar box from a local cigar store for a buck a piece. So, soon I'll begin production.

  • Rand,  Ha!  Funny....sorry, wasn't trying to prove anyone right or wrong!  Thanks for the compliment.  Like you said, I just wanted to allow the sound vibrations pass by the neck with the least obstruction possible.  The pass through neck still retains most of it's strength and rigidity this way.
  • Hi JP:

Wow! Great design. In CBN's 'Super Advanced Cigar Box Building' discussion group, I had recently written that you couldn't do that, but I was wrong. Sure, cut the resonator can down a bit to allow the neck to go through and then cut out a long sound hole in the neck where it passes through the can to allow more space for it to ring out. Cool design. I took the liberty to set people straight by linking your photo into a reply showing them how wrong I was. Here's the link.
