GAR: Grand Army of the Republic. Union soldiers and sailors from the American Civil War who served to preserve the union of states. Sure (and proudly) some served to free slaves. But truly, early on in the war they served and fought to preserve the union and country.
My town of Ogden, Iowa was not settled until after the civil war. These soldiers moved on and settled in more westerly locations. I am proud that some settled and are buried here. Also proud that some distant relatives served in the civil war and that I am in the 3rd of 4 straight generations who served.
