Wow Dave. Good eyes! I totally missed that. going back and viewing a modded pic shows a defined reflection that's not part of his shirt. So the one half or better piece of wood across the bottom front could just be an added brace.
This would be an interesting build for a Cigar box violin. You would have all the neck support wood to one side of the box. It it was me I would cut more of a wedge shape for bow clearance. Leaving as much top wood as possible. Be a great tool to work on your calle bowing. If you hitting the top of the box you know your going in at an angle. : )
Wonder which of the two played the Hurdy Gurdy laying behind the guy?
That's an interesting build. It's only got the small area of metal between where he's bowing and the neck as a front resonator. You can see it's curves over the outer piece of wood. The metal goes under the neck and wraps around that side of the instrument as well. The metal isn't cut on a curve. It's actually straight across. Only looks curved because of the texture on the inside of the box. Can't make out if the metal wraps all the way to the back of the instrument. The back of the instrument is a half inch or thicker. It looks like the neck side of the box is open. Dark enough inside the build to assume the side on his shoulder is closed.
I digitally enhancing the pic on my box. Tried to bring out more details. Pixelates really quickly when zooming in. Wasn't able to achieve a clearer image.
So....who's gona build one so we can hear what it sounds like?

Really can't make out the shape of what's behind the guy playing the fiddle. Guessing it's a Hurdy Gurdy,
