Hi...the woods in the body are mahogany, oak, spruce and a little bit of purple heart and maple .....
The neck came from a store-bought production guitar, so, probably maple and rosewood....

The "handles" simulate the outer contours of the full traditional guitar shape....and are there to afford some stability while holding the instrument. If you hold this thing as you would hold a lute or a banjo or a classical guitar (between the legs), then these extensions make the guitar very stable.
If lutes or ouds had outriggers like this they would be a hell of a lot easier to hold.
