God/Mother Nature given inspiration

I want to keep the CBG fretless, but I'll need some "fret markers". Just didn't what will be both functional and good-looking.On the late afternoon yesterday the revelation came.Does anyone know how to paint/stain/anything the wood to obtain this effect?

    Well, I still don't know how to keep the look for ever ;-) I tried with burning of the "frets", but the results aren't satisfactory (I put the pictures online, perhaps it'll be good for some other project in the future).

    Thank you, C.J., but I'd like something along the lines of "spotted neck" than "flat frets"... I may use your solution for the next projects, tho'

    I like to cut fret slots and then fill them with a mixture of epoxy and lamp black for a nice clean line that will not rub or wear off.
