No worries. From the picture it looked as if the neck came in lower than the lid of the tin. Your idea to take material off the through neck to improve resonance sounds good. Hope you get it sorted buddy!
The action isn’t my problem as the dimensions you mentioned are around what I have. My issue is that the “skin” deflected more than I was expecting and is coming into contact with the neck that goes through under the skin. Therefore, the base of the bridge is basically touching the neck that passes under the skin. I just need to disassemble it and take some wood off. Might get to it today.
This looks amazing. I think you're right that you'll get more volume if you raise the neck slightly. Banjos typically have higher action than guitars - from looking at mine the bridge is 20mm (3/4") tall, and the fretboard sits about 3mm (1/8") higher than the skin. Hope you can get it playing as good as it looks.
Also - take some Youtube lessons from the late great Pete Seeger - that's how I learned Banjo :)
In my opinion, it is easy. Don't think about it. Just start picking the strings.
I've only played banjo once and it was great fun. Having experience with open tuning like we typically use on CBG makes it relatively easy to pick up and play something interesting from the get-go. Maybe not "proper" but still a ton of fun. Don't be afraid to use your slide too. :)
