I covered the old scewholes with a Black Wallnut lamination. Added Mahogany ears and combover. I replaced the staples that made the nut with an Ebony nut. Mechanical tuners replace the eyebolt tuners. I did this to get a good nut action for good intonation.

I like deep notches in the nut. You can't jump a string out in play. I pick hard and often pick notes with my left hand fingers. It makes a "diddle" double note.
